Now you can make antibacterial gel right at home and in a few minutes

Have you seen the empty shelves in stores recently? Have you been surprised? You should not be. The panic in connection with the coronavirus epidemic made us buy out not only masks, but also various sanitising products. And when stores ran out, many of us had no choice but to rely on our own supplies.

So, if you want to make your own sanitizer do not procrastinate and get the necessary raw materials soon. Pharmacies are already starting to run out of glycerine, which is needed to manufacture soap. The good news is that our recipe does not require glycerine.

Homemade antibacterial gel with alcohol.

Why is alcohols important? The outer shell of the coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, is made up of glycoproteins (and other chemicals), which cannot resist alcohol. To make a homemade antibacterial gel you will need:

  • 200 ml of ethanol or rubbing alcohol – from a drug store
  • 80 ml of aloe vera gel
  • essential oil (optional)

Mix the alcohol with the aloe vera gel. This mixture offers a great consistency and texture (easily applicable and stable – not runny) and at the same time, it will provide care for your hands. Alcohol alone will make your skin dry. And, finally, mix in the essential oil.

You should know: Ethanol can also be found in specialized stores and it is sold under the name rubbing alcohol. A really effective antibacterial gel should have at least 60% of alcohol.

Which essential oils you may use

Essential oils will give your product a unique scent and will induce the right mood. You will feel much better when you smell your favourite lavender rather then pure sanitizer or alcohol. But that is not all, because many essential oils also offer antibacterial and antiviral properties. So, if you use them you will actually increase the effectiveness of your homemade antibacterial gel. And which ones should you use?

  • tea tree
  • lavender
  • thyme
  • juniper
  • rosemary
  • hyssop

Now, you can use only one type of oil, or you can mix oils together – perhaps even 3-4 types. For example, if you have several essential oil leftovers at home, you can use them. No need to go to the store to get more…

Our tip: you can get the desired consistency by using boiled or distilled water, but remember that the thicker it is, the more effective it is. The “runny” form is better when you travel for example because it is easier to apply. This type of gel is also suitable for children, but make sure you wash it out thoroughly.

What else should you watch out for?

A proper hygiene and care are more effective in preventing coronavirus, or any diseases for that matter, than the use of masks. But dirty hands are not the only danger. Coronavirus spreads through airborne droplets, which stick to your hands, mucous membranes and other body parts. So, make sure to follow proper hygiene rules.

In addition, you should take care of your face as well. Wash face with soap or use a gentle disinfectant solution and rinse well with water. Wash your face several times a day, especially when you are at a workplace and don’t forget to wash it again when you get home.
