Green garlic shoots should be removed

You love garlic right? Well, if you don’t, you should! It is a great energizer and should be in every kitchen. After all, it is hard to imagine a crispy butter toasts or potato pancakes without it, and of course, it is an elixir as it contains plenty of beneficial substances and antioxidants our bodies crave. What about the much discussed topic of green garlic sprouts popping out of the bulb? Some people remove it before use and some do not. Some people are very adamant about the need to remove it. Why is that?

Digestibility

Garlic is a strong and aromatic plant and can make some of us uncomfortable. For example, people with a hypersensitive gallbladder should try to make garlic more digestible and they do it by removing the green sprout from the bulb. It may be little harder if you deal with young garlic, but the older garlic is not so bad as the sprout is bigger and easier to remove But if you are not hypersensitive and in good health you do not need to bother with it. Garlic without the sprout loses a little bit of its strength.

The sprout may cause bitterness

That’s right. Sometimes, if you cook the garlic with the green sprouts, your dish may taste somewhat bitter. If you noticed that then you should probably start removing the sprout.

Easy removal

The good news is that the sprout can be removed easily. Cut the clove along its length and remove the sprout in each half with the tip of a knife. The older the garlic, the easier the removal.
