Use glass containers to grow orchids
Growing orchids in glass containers is a great alternative to a greenhouse. Yes, it is not too difficult to grow orchids indoors, but using glass containers may be a good way to grow some more demanding species. Before you decide to grow certain type of orchid you need to find out whether you can provide the necessary growing conditions. For example, some orchids can be grown outdoors, while others (Phalaenopsis, Miltonia) do not like being outdoors.
Growing requirements
One of the basic requirements includes sufficient but dispersed light. Too much light can burn leaves and will make your orchid a sick-looking plant. Insufficient light, on the other hand, may slowly kill you plant. Orchids need a certain amount of shade sure but the trick is the right balance. Another important requirement is the right temperature, which largely depends on the type of orchid you have. Some orchids live in high mountain areas and they need cooler temperatures – around 15 °C during the day and 10 °C at night. Other species grow in monsoon regions (Southeast Asia) and need temperature around 20 °C during the day and 14 °C at night. The third group lives in tropical forests and the ideal temperature for these plants should range from 20 to 25 °C.

Soil
Orchids are specific plants, known as epiphytes, which usually grow on trees but are not parasites. Most species of orchids are epiphytes and they need a suitable substrate. Roots need the right balance between moist and airy environment and if you provide the right substrate then you solved both problems. The soil should contain peat and bark. Water orchids once a week and make sure that excess of water does not remain in the substrate. Keep in mind though, that the substrate should remain moist. If you can, use rain water.
Growing in glass
If you use a glass container you will be able to create the right microclimate suitable for rare species. You may place orchids in an illuminated display cabinet and grow smaller orchids. It is important to use a stable substrate. To make things easier, purchase a humidity and temperature meter. Make sure that any artificial lighting does not heat your plants. Ventilate the room from time to time to ensure fresh air circulation.
