Plant a mushroom and harvest a bunch
Sure, you can go to the forest to pick mushrooms and make a nice trip for the entire family, but did it ever cross your mind that you can grow different types of mushrooms at home? Mushrooms require specific conditions to grow and they are not easy to meet and this is the reason why many people do not grow mushrooms at home. So, you can either go to the forest or you can go to the supermarket. The Chinese were the first to grow mushrooms at home. The shiitake mushroom. Since then mushroom cultivation has spread all over the world and today, you can grow more than twenty types of mushrooms at home!
What mushroom varieties can you grow at home?
Well, these days you can choose almost any mushroom type but you should start with oyster mushrooms, champignons or Portobello mushrooms as these are the easiest to start with. No matter what mushroom you choose, always choose a package that comes from an organic farm. This will make things much easier. To be successful you need to provide the right humidity and meet other necessary requirements.

Mushroom pieces
This growing method is probably the fastest because you use a mycelium that is found on the particular mushroom. Mycelium has its own typical aroma and you have certainly encountered it when you were digging for example. Over time, mycelium clumps together and forms so-called primordium, from which mushrooms are formed. Mycelium and primordium are found on harvested mushroom legs that are in contact with soil. Using this part of a mushroom you can grow mushrooms using those you bought in the supermarket.
Here is what you need
Growing mushrooms is possible but not easy. To grow mushrooms you need a bed made of straw, a container of water, a mushroom that you want to plant, a cardboard (or a paper bag or plastic basket), soil (clay), recycled paper, food foil and a spray bottle. You make a bed out of the straw and submerge it into water for a few days. This way it will absorb sufficient amount of water. When you are ready to plant remove the bed from the container. If you do not have straw, you can use hamster bedding or shredded cardboard.
Prepare the mushrooms
Now you need to prepare mushrooms. They must be in good shape, not old or sic looking mushrooms. You need to see the fine hair at the end of the stems – this is the mycelium. Cut these ends into small pieces (about 6 mm in size). Take the container where you will create layers. The container may be made out of a cardboard, paper or plastic. Put the soil on the bottom of the container and cover it with the wet straw and add the mushroom cuttings on top. Add more straw and more cuttings – until you use all cuttings. The last layer must be straw.
Heat and humidity
It is very important to maintain the correct temperature, which should range from 18 to 23 °C. Mushrooms grow in dark. To achieve the proper “darkness” cover the container with a paper lid with holes to allow airflow. In about two to four weeks, the mycelium should start growing . Cover the mycelium and maintain humidity but make sure mushrooms have enough room to grow.
