How to reheat fried schnitzels to make them fresh again

Schnitzels

All it takes is a little talk about schnitzels and our mouths start to water. Right? At least in Europe… We simply love schnitzels in all shapes and forms. Poultry, pork, rabbit, beef, minced, Dutch, we all have our favourite. We know that fried food is not exactly healthy, but every now and then will not hurt anybody. Right?

Juicy versus crispy

Sure, freshly made schnitzel is both juicy and crispy (unless you messed up the recipe really bad). But can you make a schnitzel juicy and crispy even after reheat? Usually you lose one or the other…

Microwave

There are special containers for reheating food in the microwave and if you use them schnitzel will not dry out, but it will not be crispy. If you do not have a special container, you just put it on a plate and cover it with a lid. Heat it on low for 2-3 minutes. If you leave it too long, the meat will become tough. You can heat it on high power for about half a minute. The breading will be a bit crispier and the meat will dry out slightly.

Steam
If you prefer juicy schnitzels and do not care about crispy put the schnitzel in a steamer pot with a little hot water, cover with a lid and steam for a while. The water should not boil too much. If you have many schnitzels, stack them upright and the breeding will not be so soggy.

Oven

Preheat oven to medium, place schnitzels on a baking sheet and put a piece of butter on each one. Bake until the butter melts. Turn off the oven and wait a few minutes. The schnitzels should be almost as good as freshly fried. You may also wrap schnitzels in aluminium foil, but they will lose a bit of the crispiness…
