How can you tell a bad watermelon from a good one?

Watermelon

Most people want to buy the ripest watermelon but do not think much about overripe or bad watermelons. If you are not able to recognize some warning signs, you may bring home a completely rotten or unsuitable fruit or vegetable. This does not apply to melons only.

Fortunately, choosing the right watermelon is not that hard. Just look at few important signs and you can easily choose the right one for you.

Colour

When you look at a watermelon, the first thing that you should pay attention to is the colour. Generally speaking, the richer and darker the colour of the skin, the better. Light green skin indicates that a watermelon is not ripe enough. A variety of different stripes should be okay, but watermelon should not have any suspiciously soft spots at all.

Another sign is a presence of a yellow spot on the bottom of the watermelon (the spot where the melon was lying on the ground). A deep yellow spot is a good indicator that your watermelon had enough time to ripe.

Inspect the stem

Unfortunately, the vast majority of watermelons sold in stores do not have a stem, but if you are lucky and find one with a stem, check it. A watermelon should be ripe enough if the stem is dry or at least brown to yellow, but if you see a lively green one it means that it was harvested too soon.

What about the sound

Unfortunately, even if you follow all the above, sometimes you may still have doubts. So, before you put a watermelon in your basket, squeeze it with your hands. It should make a clear crackling sound and that means it is ripe enough.
