Getting seeds from tomatoes for the next season

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are pretty easy to grow and each fruit produces plenty of seeds that you can use for the next season. Many people do just that and you should too. If you do it correctly you will enjoy a healthy and plentiful harvest. This is how our ancestors did it for generations, so here we go.

Seeds

No one has a problem with tomato seeds. We simply eat them. Well, there are some recipes that need only the flesh – even without the juice. So, if that is the case, you should use the opportunity to get your own seeds. It is not a simple process of picking seeds, but it is not hard either. Only get seeds from tomatoes that are fully ripe (not from green tomatoes or those that ripen on your windowsill at the end of the season). Cut the tomato in half and scoop out the seeds and put them in a jar.

Seed fermentation

You cannot separate the seeds from the pulp that surrounds them but that is okay. Add about 150 ml of water to the glass and let them float. Cover the glass and let it sit in a warm place for a few days. After couple days the seeds start ferment. This process is complete when the pulp is covered with mould and the seeds sink down the bottom. This is why you should use glass. Remove the mould and rinse seeds thoroughly. All pulp and mould must be gone.

Seed drying

Now you need to dry the seeds. Spread them on a paper and when they are dry put them in an airtight container. The seeds are now ready for next season. Plant as usual. Just like you would do with any store-bought seeds. You can repeat this process indefinitely!
