When your orchid is turning yellow
The most common type of orchid that many people grow at home is probably Phalaenopsis, but there are other types of course. Dendrobium, Cattleya dowiana or the unusual-looking Cymbidium. But orchids may be stubborn sometimes and refuse to grow properly. A very common sign that your orchid is not doing well is when flowers are turning yellow. But do not worry. You can still save your orchid.
A natural part of the life cycle of most orchids is the time when the plant needs to rest and goes into a dormant state. But make no mistake, even during this stage you need to properly care for it if you want your orchid to bloom again.
Keep your orchid happy
Many people think that orchids are very delicate plants. Well, they are but it is not entirely true. Most species only need three basic things to be happy:
the right amount of sun,
the right amount of water
the right substrate.
Lack of light could be problematic
The most common reason why orchids do not bloom is the lack of light. But how can you tell that your orchid is getting the right amount? Well, check leaves. If leaves are dark green, then your orchid is not receiving enough light. Yellow to green leaves or red leaves indicate too much light.Orchids should have bright green leaves.

Water properly
The most difficult requirement to follow is a correct watering. How can you tell that your orchids need watering? If your orchid looks “light” and you see gray roots through the transparent pot or holes it is a sign that it needs watering. Water and take a look at roots. They should go green pretty quicklyAll roots should turn green immediately after watering.Green roots indicate a healthy orchid. Check the following warning signs:
-
- gray, dry roots – lack of water
-
- brown or black roots – too much water
- white roots – critical lack of water
A healthy orchid but it still does not bloom. Fertilization is the issue
This is another tricky problem. You should fertilize orchids once a month only with a fertilizer for orchids. However, if you have a dry orchid it is not a good idea to fertilize it. Water it first. A fertilizer applied to a dry orchid may burn dry roots. Only apply fertilizer after watering.
How to properly winterize orchids
Remember that orchids go dormant during winter months and often lose their flowers and leaves. People who does not know that often throw orchids in the trash. Do not do that! Orchids simply need time to regenerate and to strengthen the root system, get rid of excess leaves and buds and gain energy for the next flowering season. Well grown orchids in pots usually bloom every 8-12 months.
