Grow your own lemon tree from a seed. Regular egg will help
We all enjoy the fresh taste of lemon, especially in lemonade, tea, dressing or salad. We even use the peel in some dishes and recipes. Lemons are very healthy and have the “ability” to wake us up. Another great feature is the incredible and refreshing scent. No air freshener can match that and indeed, people use lemons instead of commercial air refreshers.
We have a good news and is that you can grow lemons at home and you do not have to spend money to do that. Well, you need to wait for quite some time, but with proper care and patience you will enjoy these delicious home-grown fruits.
Not every seed is the same
We all know that lemon trees come from subtropical climates and growing lemon in a dark apartment or house will not work well. However, there are few varieties that you can grow in your apartment. For example, the Pavlovo lemon tree can deal with higher temperatures and dry environment in your apartment. Another option is to grow the calamondin citrus tree. Yes, it is not a pure lemon, but a cross between a lemon and a mandarin producing smaller orange fruits, but they taste like a lemon.

Growing from seeds
You have two options – either you buy seeds from a garden store, or you buy a nice and fresh lemon and remove seeds from it. We shall focus on the second option, growing a lemon tree from seeds. Before you start get the following:
- paper towel
- lemon seeds
- water
- a glass container with a lid
Remove seeds from the lemon and dry them. If there is still flesh on seeds, get tweezers and clean them. Now, take a paper towel or tissue and place the seed on the towel, moisten it and cover it with other towel. Moisten again. Prepare the container – it may be a glass or jar or container that you can seal with a lid. Place the wet towel with the seed inside and seal it. Write the date on the lid.

Wait two to three weeks
After two to three weeks, the seed will develop roots and that is the right time to use the egg. Remove the top of the eggshell and remove the egg stuff. Make a hole in the larger part of the shell. Put a bit of substrate in the shell – you may use soil especially designed for citrus trees. It needs to be rich in nutrients – compost works too. Place the seed in the soil roots down and cover it with substrate.
Place the eggshell in a bowl and moisten the substrate. Water it regularly – never let the soil dry out. The shell will turn green in a few weeks and when it does wait 14 more days at least (you should see few leaves by now). Prepare a flower pot with substrate, carefully crush the shell, do not damage the roots. Plant the seed. Water the tiny plant regularly. Make sure to put the plant in a bright but not warm place. Do not fertilize during the winter. You can fertilize with chicken droppings during the season.
