Does your dog bleed from nose?

Dogs

We love dogs. We really do. They are like human companions to us, but just like humans, dogs get sick. Blood coming from dog’s nose is a warning sign that you should not ignore. There are multiple reasons for this phenomena and it may be accompanied by many additional symptoms. It may be a sign of a respiratory, digestive, urinary or nervous system disease. If you ignore it you may seriously jeopardize the health of your pet.

Nosebleed – first aid

If you notice that your dog is bleeding from the nose, try to keep it calm. Avoid quick movements and do not get excited. You may apply an ice pack to the base of the nose, which usually slows down or stops the bleeding. Visit your vet. There may be a number of causes such as trauma related to nose, an upper respiratory infection, but it may also be a tumour. Only a vet can come up with the right diagnosis.

Additional symptoms

In addition to bleeding there may be other symptoms such as vomiting (unusual dark colour), swelling, strange appearance of nose skin, unusual behaviour (whining). Even if your dog does not show these symptoms you still need to visit your veterinarian.

Causes

There may be many causes. Damage to the nose due to a fall may be a serious issue but you can easily tell that the bleeding occurs due to a wound. More serious diseases include high blood pressure, various dental disease, a tumour, coagulation problems, the presence of a foreign body in the nose, ingestion of rat poison, fungal or tick infection.

Treatment

Treatment should be determined by your veterinarian based on the cause. You just make sure that your dog is breathing properly and prevent excessive blood loss. Afterwards, you need to monitor your dog, its appetite and overall behaviour.
