Calcium on your lawn reduces weed growth
Calcium is very important for proper development of your lawn because it keep soil acidity in check. Slightly acidic soil prevents weeds from growing but at the same time it promotes the growth of grass. If you have soil that is too acidic, you need to de-acidify it by liming. Before liming however, you should do a chemical analysis to determine how acidic the soil is. Calcium allows you to maintain a constant pH level, increases the effectiveness of fertilizers (mineral and organic), improves soil structure and supports development of microflora in soil. The ideal soil pH for lawns ranges from 5.6 to 6.5. Soil de-acidification should be done before winter or in early spring, before your lawn start growing again.
Calcium for your lawn
In addition to growth, calcium is important for other reasons. Calcium helps break down fertilizers, helping your lawn to use nutrients better. It also improves soil structure and has a positive effect on the development of microflora. As with any good thing you should not overdo it do because you may change the pH of the soil too much and you do not want that. If you managed to de-acidify too much you need to use acidifying fertilizers to fix it.

How do you know that your lawn needs calcium?
A typical indicator that your lawn needs liming is excessive growth of moss. Moss thrives in acidic soils. If you use calcium and magnesium fertilizers you can fix it and suppress moss growth at the same time.Depending on the degree of soil acidification, it is usually recommended to use 5-10 kg of fertilizer per 100 m2 of lawn. Dolomite is suitable for lawns deficient in calcium and magnesium. For lighter soils, use calcium-carbonate fertilizer.
When should you use lime?
If you use liming to de-acidify the soil, do it before winter or at the turn of February and March, when grass has not yet grown. Before liming, make sure to know what fertilizers you will use. If you want to promote growth check which one contains calcium. If you use too much calcium and you do liming you may unintentionally change the pH of the soil.
