Water tomatoes properly. Not too much, not too little

Tomatoes

Proper watering is an important factor if you want to grow strong and healthy tomatoes. Too much water can invite fungal diseases and various pests and, too little can dry the plant too much and even kill it. Sudden or irregular watering is very bad. If you forgot watering do not water twice as much the next day. We all know that too much water too quickly will make tomatoes crack. Proper watering is not difficult. Incorrect watering slows growth, promotes root rot, poor fruit quality, reduces yield, and make plans vulnerable to pests and diseases such as leaf yellowing.

Regular watering

As already mentioned, you should not water tomatoes every few days or so and if you forget you should not water twice more the next day. Regular watering is very important. You may do it every day but you cannot overdo it. Consistent watering gives tomato plants steady supply of water and that is what you want. Take your time when watering. Do not water too quickly because if you do, water tends to run away and will not get down to the roots. Take it slow to make sure that water can penetrate through the soil and reaches roots. A correctly set irrigation system can be a great help.

Deep watering

There is another important reason why you want water to reach deep down. It allows the plant to develop a strong root system and therefore stronger plants, which are able to draw more nutrients. This also increases yield. A plant with a deep root system is much better suited to survive potential dry periods. The only way water reaches deep down is if you water slowly. Experts recommend soaking the soil to a depth of 18 cm. An irrigation system can do that and you will save time.

Avoid leaves

Everybody knows this rule. When watering you need to water roots not the leaves. There are several reasons for this. Watering from above means that water gets spread around and small droplets will stick to leaves, and very little amount or none at all will reach the roots. Tomato plants are susceptible to mould and fungal diseases and water on leaves can promote rot and diseases. Focus on the part of the stem right above the soil and aim watering can properly.

Mulching

Mulching is another way to help you with slow watering. Mulching will keep moisture in the soil longer. This is very beneficial during hot summer. Create an organic mulching layer about 5 cm thick. You may use grass clippings, leaves or compost. When these materials decompose, simply work the stuff into the soil.
