Two May must-dos: Sturdy supports and proper shading
May is the month when everything in the garden is growing, and it’s a joy to look around. Yet there’s plenty of work to be done, including seemingly unimportant little tasks. Yes, only seemingly. Some may be more important than we could ever imagine. In the following lines, we will therefore focus on two May tasks that must not be overlooked under any circumstances. May is likely the last month when these can be effectively addressed.
Sturdy supports ensure proper growth and the plant’s survival
We must undoubtedly start with sturdy supports. May is the last month when we can still install these supports without damaging the plants themselves. If, for example, our tomatoes, peas, or beans have already grown tall, it becomes much more complicated, and the entire process may not be possible without damaging the plant in question. Strong winds, moreover, can wreak havoc. All it takes is a small spring or summer storm, and it’s over. A good support is practically invisible. A bad support is visible, but only when it’s already too late.
Shading is essential for many plants
Unfortunately, many of us only start shading plants once the effects of direct sunlight are already visible on them. The leaves turn brown or curl severely. By this point, it is often too late to protect or save the plants in any way. Even now, in May, we should be thinking about which areas will be the hottest and which containers might overheat. Even ordinary non-woven fabric can help us in this regard.
Mulching is also important
Of course, that’s the case. Retaining moisture in the soil is practically essential. The garden certainly doesn’t need to be in direct sunlight all day for the plants to thrive perfectly. When it comes to mulching, you can use both grass clippings and straw, or perhaps wood chips or other materials. This will also prevent weeds from growing through.
