Mulching in May. Why it’s worth it and how to do it

Mulching

May is the month when everything in the garden is coming to life. Especially now, at the end of May, our flower beds are in order, and the plants have been planted or sown. It might seem that all the work is done and there’s no need to put in much more effort. But the opposite is true. Preparing the flower beds for the hot summer is very important. Mulching the flower beds undoubtedly falls into this category of tasks. Mulch is what protects the flower bed from the sun and helps the plants continue to thrive. We will focus on mulching in this article.

How does mulching help?

One of the most underrated spring tasks helps in several ways. A layer of mulch provides excellent protection against water evaporation and protects roots from overheating. This can often happen very easily. The mulch layer protects plants from weeds. Mulch improves soil structure and perfectly supports soil life. This provides plants with a stable environment, and they do not suffer from potential stress caused by fluctuations, which is ideal.

What Can Be Used as Mulch

There are quite a few options, and they differ based on the properties of the specific materials. Let’s take a closer look at each one.

Grass clippings

This is the cheapest and most accessible classic option. It’s best to let the grass dry out a bit first. It’s definitely a good idea to use only a thin layer of grass so that moisture and pathogens don’t accumulate in it.

Wood chips

They are quite sturdy, won’t blow away easily, and definitely don’t trap excessive moisture in layers. They also look very nice around ornamental plants.

Leaves

Avoid using leaves. For one thing, they simply blow away, and for another, we don’t know what pathogens the trees were infected with.

Straw

This is undoubtedly suitable as well. It’s fairly light, so it also blows around. It’s used extensively around strawberry plants.

Bark

This is primarily suitable for conifers and other small trees.

You’ll notice the difference in a few weeks

Of course, there are significant differences between mulched and unmulched beds. A mulched bed requires less watering, grows far fewer weeds, and the plants won’t be stressed. It also saves us work.
