Spring pruning of roses. Prepare your plants for a flood of flowers

Roses

Spring is fast approaching, and it is time to tend to both the vegetable garden and the ornamental garden. The latter is, of course, dominated by beautiful roses. These flowers often represent the centerpiece of an ornamental garden. This is not surprising. If we prune roses in the spring, they will bloom much more and the plants will be stronger. Therefore, in the following lines, we will take a closer look at spring pruning of roses. It is not at all complicated, and anyone can do it.

Nothing should be rushed. The time for pruning will come

Exactly. If you prune your roses too early, the plant will probably freeze. You will definitely not see any flowers. The ideal time to start is when temperatures are consistently above freezing. It is best to wait until the roses have swollen to a size of about 0.5 to 0.8 cm. After pruning roses, it is also necessary to fertilize the bushes and treat the wounds with grafting wax. It is definitely worth spraying the roses with a 1% solution of copper sulfate.

How to prune roses in spring

Perhaps more accurately, thinning roses. All you need is a pair of garden shears. Ideally, you should thin out the shoots that grow towards the center of the bush. Frozen and dried shoots must also be removed.
They have no place on the bush. If you know that the bush had lots of beautiful flowers last year, prune it only minimally. If you prune small shoots, you will achieve long stems with individual buds. Don’t overdo it; the plant must not lose most of its green parts.

Don’t forget to feed your roses in spring

This is undoubtedly also very important. Fertilization is optimal in March or April. A nitrogen-based mineral fertilizer should be used. This stimulates the currant to grow. Ammonium disulfate is also used. Approximately 20 grams are needed for each plant. Otherwise, bird droppings are also a good choice. There are many alternatives. Natural alternatives include banana peels.
