Raids on bear garlic are pointless. Just plant it at home

Bear garlic

Spring is in full swing and many of us have the rights associated with this time of year to harvest bear garlic. Such a green herb is a delicious and unique ingredient that can be used in a variety of spring dishes in the kitchen. Bear garlic pesto, spread or other dishes are definitely worth it and at other times of the year we simply do not have the chance to indulge in them, as fresh bear garlic is simply not available. But many people rather plunder our forests. This is despicable to say the least.

Plundering forests for bear garlic

In many locations, harvesting bear garlic is not even possible. Protected areas in particular are typical in this respect.

However, people often go into the forests and take whole bear garlic plants, including the bulbs. As a result, no more bear garlic will grow in the area. This is a pity, because such destruction of nature is completely unnecessary.

How to pick bear garlic

Simple. Just cut a few leaves off the plant and leave the rest in the forest. The plant itself will not suffer significantly and you will get a treasure that is unique in the kitchen. You can cut bear garlic in this way from many plants, which usually grow side by side. This way you will have more than enough leaves. After all, we need quite a lot of them for this bear garlic pesto.

Growing bear garlic at home is easy

There is nothing simpler. We tried it ourselves. We bought our bear garlic directly from the garden shop. We planted it in a shady part of the garden near the fence. Bear garlic doesn’t need any extra nutrient-laden soil. We bought a classic garden substrate, dug the necessary hole and put individual bear garlic plants in it. They looked wilted for a while, but after a few waterings they recovered and grew. After the end of the season in summer they disappeared and always reappeared in spring. We could then easily harvest a few leaves each year.

Tip: Growing bear garlic at home is easy. We tried it and definitely didn’t regret it.

Water here and there, otherwise nothing

Caring for bear garlic is easy. It is basically a maintenance-free plant. It’s not just a matter of watering bear garlic now and then. But you should definitely plant it in a bordered bed. We’ve had it in the grass where it’s often not very visible, which is a problem when mowing the grass.
