Mulching on slopes
Some types of mulching materials are pretty light and may be blown away or disturbed by strong winds. But the situation is even more challenging if you want to mulch on a slope. A mulching layer may slide down or may be blown away by winds. The effect of a wind is stronger on slopes. And there is a rain of course, which can wash mulch away. So, if you want to use mulch on a slope, you need to pay attention to the underlying structure. You may use aids to help you keep the layer where it should be.
Protective net
You can use a special net to secure the mulching layer on the soil. A net will ensure proper access to oxygen and light and mulch will eventually decompose (if it is fully organic). Crushed bark mulch is especially suitable for hills. You may also use a fabric – but this can promote growth of mould and an ugly surface.
Fencing
Fencing is usually used to prevent mulch from sliding down on a slope. Water flowing down the hill can carry away not only the mulch but also the soil underneath. The heavier the mulch, the more likely it is to slide. So you should build a proper fencing around the mulch.

Choose the right mulch
The type of mulch you choose depends greatly on the gradient of the slope but also how high the hill is. You should also decide whether you need a slow-decomposing mulch or an economical mulch. While slow-decomposing mulch will last for a while and even add nutrients to the soil, economical mulch can be made from inorganic matter (rocks for example ).It does not degrade, but it does not add any nutrients to the soil. Shredded bark is most often used on hills and slopes because it takes longer to decompose than other types of mulch and it is affordable.
How often should you change mulch?
You do not need to replace your mulch every year, as many people think. When you notice that your mulch is starting to wear down or deteriorates, you should replace it. This is usually done after four to five years.
