How to fertilize blackberries in summer and autumn

Blackberries

Blackberries are delicious and healthy. We all know that. They contain valuable nutrients and vitamins beneficial for human health. You may choose from several varieties but all of them require proper care and correctly applied fertilizers. So, we shall tell you how to fertilize blackberries properly and how to avoid common mistakes.

Here are the basic and correct principles you should follow. Blackberries need several important substances during ripening and during the growing phase. These mainly include nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, boron, copper, calcium and magnesium. Some of these substances may be obtained from mulch others from mineral fertilizers or from compost, peat or humus.

Mineral fertilizers for blackberries

Use mineral fertilizers with plenty of nitrogen in the spring. When the bush blooms and prepares for the production of fruit you need to supply phosphorus and potassium. Do not provide these two earlier, and before the winter comes and when you harvested all fruits you should fertilize with potassium again.

Organic fertilizer

Organic fertilizers that work best for blackberries are:

  • manure,
  • compost,
  • sawdust
  • wood ash

You may also buy biological fertilizers suitable for different phases of the growing season or you may use mixed (organic-mineral) fertilizers. These fertilizers are usually called humus or humic fertilizers. They are made from compost, peat, manure, various food waste and coal, etc. and are usually “boosted” with phosphoric acid, ammonia solutions or even with potassium salts.
