How to deal with stubborn old stump
Do you have a large stump in your garden and do not want to call in heavy equipment? Well, any stump will rot eventually and disintegrate, but if it is a big and hard wood, it will take a very long time. Some people leave stumps as they are even though they may not be very attractive, but it is a nature after all… You may try to speed up the disintegration process. So, what do you need to do that? We shall tell you in the following lines.
A chainsaw is a must
If you know how to use a chainsaw safely, you can start. Do not neglect eye and hearing protection. If you have special work clothing, use it. First, you need to roughen the surface of the stump. Cut several grooves anywhere you can. The depth should be around 5 cm. This will create a kind of checkerboard on the surface of the stump. Make sure you are using an old chain. When cutting a stump the chain will turn dull.

Mature compost can work wonders
It is true. Mix a well-matured compost with a compost accelerator and pile up the mixture on the surface of the stump. Make sure to fill all grooves and cuts. Use a broom to do so. All grooves should be completely filled. If you do not have a chainsaw at home, you can also drill holes in the stump using a large drill. You need to take your time to disturb the stump sufficiently so, the compost is as effective as possible.
Microorganisms and wood-destroying fungi play a leading role
The stump will gradually decompose. Microorganisms and wood-decaying fungi in the mixture will speed up the process. To make the decomposition even more efficient, sprinkle it with a compost accelerator from time to time. You may also keep the stump wet and it will decompose faster. However, do not expect to the stump be to be gone the next morning of course. A full disintegration may take 5 to 10 years.
