Homemade wasp traps

Wasps

Everybody likes to relax after hard work. One of the best ways to relax is in your outdoor seating area. But to make it even better, you should treat yourself with something sweet: fruit, an ice cream or a drink. Great, but sometimes you get unpleasant insects that keep bothering you and your well-deserved rest is gone. One of the most annoying pests are wasps. Yes they do not have as strong sting as bees, but they can attack more than once. Best protection is to lure wasps away from your snack and here is how to do that.

Watch out

We see wasps negatively but they are rather useful in nature (and in your garden) but if you are allergic to wasp sting you do not want them around. If you see many wasp around regularly, it usually means that they have a nest nearby. Wasps like to build nests under horizontal surfaces, such as gutters, benches or roofs.

Plastic bottle

Here is a simple trap. Mix a glass of vinegar, 4 tablespoons of salt, 4 tablespoons of sugar and pour into a plastic bottle. You need to cut off the top third. Turn the part with the neck you cut off upside done and slide it into the other part (unscrew the cap, of course). Wasps will fly in, but will not be able to fly out again. Place this trap on a tree or where you see wasps often. Replace the bait after couple days.

Canning glasses

You can also make a wasp trap from a glass that has a screw-on lid. Remove the lid and use a sharp object (a screwdriver) to poke few holes in the lid. Make sure the holes are large enough so wasp can pass through. Pour the bait (fruit, beer, or the mixture mentioned above) in the glass and close the lid. Again, wasps will get in, but it will not be able to fly out.

Wasp repellents

If you want to repel wasps, you can use available repellents with a scent that they do not like. For example, garlic. Wasp hate that.Grind garlic on sandpaper and hang it where you do not want to see wasps. Aromatic spices and herbs such as basil have similar effect. Or lemon for example. Take a large lemon and stick few cloves in it. If do not feel like making anything, buy a lemon-scented candle. But it has to be a good quality candle. Wasps do not like lemon scent.
