Great eggshell fertilizer

This fertilizer is also called eggshell tea and you only need two ingredients to make it. Water and eggshells. Using eggshells to enrich soil is nothing new and many gardeners do just that or they use eggshells as protection against snails and slugs. Making a liquid fertilizer – an eggshell tea – is a great way to provide nutrients to your indoor and outdoor plants.

Calcium

The main substance hidden in eggshells is calcium. If plants lack calcium, they are more susceptible to diseases. Using eggshell tea may help you prevent these problems. You can tell that your plants are suffering from lack of calcium if the tips of leafy vegetables are getting brown, or if the heart of lettuce is turning brown or if you notice that the inside of celery is rotting and finally, flowers of peppers and tomatoes are turning brown. The good news is that you cannot overdose with eggshells fertilizer.

Making fertilizer from eggshells?

Pour about 3 litres of water into a pot. Add eggshells from 15 eggs or more (depending on the size) and bring it to a boil. Let stand overnight. Drain the mixture. Use any leftover eggshells in your composter. Water once a week.

Benefits of eggshells

In addition to calcium, eggshells also contain potassium and small amounts of phosphorus, magnesium and sodium. “Tea” made from eggshells may seem like a “weak decoction” compared to using eggshells directly. If you feel that way, wash eggshells and let them dry.Grind them into a powder (in a mortar, blender, etc.) and mix them with the garden soil. You can sprinkle larger pieces of crushed eggshells around salads and other plants to protect them from slugs and snails.
