Fern is a great plant and we know how to support its growth
Fern is an undemanding plant which grows even in poor conditions. You may grow fern in your bathroom for example. However, even such resilient plant may get “sick” and its leaves may start to wither and the plant may die. If you had this experience, the most logical explanation is that your fern probably grew under bad conditions. Well, is there anything you can do and save your fern and bring back its beautiful appearance? Read on and you shall find out.
Suitable location
Choose the location carefully. Ferns need plenty of light to grow, but they do not like direct sunlight. Fern can live in a light shade but that is not an ideal environment. The plant will grow, but not as quickly as it would in a brighter location. The location should also be well away from any heat source – a heat radiator for example. Close proximity to heat sources will turn tips of the plant brown.

Correct watering
Fern is a plant that loves moisture and that is why you should never let the soil dry out completely! You need to check often and you can do that by touching the soil with your finger – it must not feel dry. In addition to regular watering, you can also spray water mist on leaves. As with any plant, do not overwater. Waterlogged soil will not do good to fern.
Air humidity
Ferns also need “good” air to grow, especially during the heating season when we use heating systems which dry the air too much. You can increase air humidity by spraying the plant. If you are a forgetful gardener or you do not want to constantly think about watering or spraying you should purchase a humidifier, which will improve the air quality. Humid air is also good for your health. Another option is to place your fern on a tray with water and stones. This way, you will provide the plant with enough moisture. Just add more water under the stones from time to time.
Fertilization
Fern needs fertilization but not too often. During the growing season – which is in spring and summer – you may fertilize once a month. Purchase a special fertilizer for ferns, or use natural “stuff” you have at home anyway. Ferns love coffee and tea sediment. So, when you finish your morning cup, use the sediment to fertilize your fern. Fertilization is not necessary in fall and winter.
