Cucumbers not doing well? Beer will make them happy!

Cucumbers

A cold beer in a hot summer is undoubtedly the best thirst quencher. We all know that, but did you know that cucumbers like beer too? Well, beer is loaded with nutrients and especially cucumbers will appreciate a sip or two. In a hot summer cucumber leaves gradually dry up, wither and often fail to produce fruit. So, how can beer help and how to make a fertilizer from beer? We shall tell you in the following lines.

Why beer?

First of all, beer contains many nutrients that support cucumber growth. Biologically active substances in beer give cucumbers energy needed to produce fruit over and over again. These substances include succinic acid (also called butanedioic acid) and minerals such as potassium and nitrogen, which are especially important for fruiting. Beer is beneficial for other plants as well.

Beer fertilizer

Nothing complicated and you do not need to sacrifice your cold “brewsky” and you do not have to provide any special treatment. Just a regular cheap light beer, even stale and old beer. Mix beer with warm water. You need 1 litre of beer per 10 litres of water. Mix thoroughly and use immediately.

Water wet soil with the mixture

Pour the fertilizer near the plant, not on it. Best if the soil is a bit wet. How often should you repeat the process? Ideally every two weeks. We have tried it and it helped our cucumbers quite a bit. We should mention however, that it rained more during that period and our soil has been well fertilized since autumn. Well, the good news is that it is a cheap fertilizer so, you should go ahead and try for yourself.
