Big harvest: Spring watering of currants with hot water
Would you like to have beautiful currants in the summer? Of course, beautiful large berries similar to grapes are definitely worth it. But they won’t just grow on the bush. You have to work for it. There are, of course, several steps to take, but treating currants with chemicals at the end of winter is not exactly an ideal idea. That is why we will focus on pouring hot water over the currants. Our grandmothers used this method. They knew very well that water is not expensive and that it would help the currants produce a great harvest.
An ecological fight against pathogens with a long tradition
That’s right. After all, water is a purely natural substance. All you need to do is heat it up. However, you should definitely follow certain rules to avoid damaging the plants. Hot water protects the bushes from pests, especially aphids, mites, and various fungi that traditionally attack currants. Pests often overwinter in the soil around currants and also in shoots. In the past, our grandmothers poured hot water around the plants, but today it is possible to treat the entire bush.
When to get started?
It is generally said that the ideal time is the end of winter. It is difficult to specify a date, as it is very individual. It is hard to say when this winter will end. The ideal time is when temperatures are consistently above zero. There may still be snow around the plants, but it will no longer freeze. Frost could still cause damage after watering the clearing. The first half of March is usually ideal. Pests have not usually laid their eggs yet, so they can be easily destroyed.

Water temperature and watering method
The water does not have to be boiling. It is enough if it reaches a temperature of around 80 degrees Celsius. It will cool down a little more during watering. A metal watering can is ideal for watering. Plastic could deform, which we don’t want. The water should be poured quickly so that it does not cool down, but in a rose pattern. The stream must not be too strong. This could damage the plants. Watering should be done from a distance of less than 10 cm, ideally for 5 seconds. Simply put, quickly.
