Asian bleeding heart

Asian bleeding heart (Lamprocapnos spectabilis) is a plant that produces unusual flowers and attracts attention. Flowers resemble a heart. It is also very easy to grow and is almost frost-resistant. You do not need to cover it or protect it for the winter. Another advantage is that you do not have to buy the plant. If you know someone who already grows Asian bleeding heart, just ask. You can easily reproduce this plant by cuttings.

Suitable location

The ideal time to plant is autumn or spring but you need to be careful with watering. Asian bleeding heart hates summer droughts, but it does not like waterlogged soils either – which you may get in spring. So, consider these requirements before selecting the right location. It prefers a fertile soil that needs to be moist. A good idea is to work some compost into the soil before planting. Partial shade is ideal.

Caring for Asian bleeding heart

Caring is not difficult. The only thing you need to watch is watering. Make sure the soil is moist and never dries out. You should also fertilize regularly and you should do so in spring, when the plant wakes up. With proper care, you can expect beautiful heart-shaped flowers from May to June. The colour ranges from white to dark pink.

What to do after flowering

Once the plant has finished blooming, the stems will turn yellow and dry out. When this happens you need to cut them just above the ground. This will help the plant to survive the winter. Asian bleeding heart is fully frost-resistant, so you do not need to cover it for the winter. However, if your plant is very young and you want to make sure it survives hard frosts, you can cover it. Use pine branches for example.

Is this plant poisonous?

Well, yes a little bit, but it is not dangerous. In any case, keep it out of reach of pets and small children. Just to be on the safe side.
