Grow delicious Portobello mushrooms at home
Mushroom season is almost over but that does not mean you cannot grow your own mushrooms. Yes, you can grow Agaricus mushrooms at home.
Mushrooms belonging to the Agaricus genus are very popular, as they require little “cooking” effort and are very tasty.
Buy a grow kit
You can buy mushroom grow kits in stores. These special boxes or kits contain mycelium and composted mushroom substrate. You may leave it in the bag or transfer it into a box. When ready, spray with water – use a spray bottle – that is basically all. No further care required. Remember to maintain temperature around 24 °C.
If you are growing mushrooms in a plastic bag you need to cut off the top of the bag to give mushrooms room to grow, but only cut the top when the mycelium growth phase is over (that is when the bag already smells like delicious mushrooms).
Enjoy! Here is a recipe
Once you have grown mushrooms successfully use them in your favourite recipe. Here is one.

Mushrooms stuffed with meat, pepper and tomatoes
Ingredients – stuffing:
- 12 large mushroom caps (pileus)
- 500 g of minced meat
- 1 large onion
- 1 tablespoon of oil
- 1 egg
- 1 handful of parsley
- Pepper, salt, ground cumin
- Butter to grease the baking dish
Vegetable side:
- 4 large tomatoes
- 2 peppers
- 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil
- Handful of basil
- Lemon juice
- Salt, pepper
Procedure:
Clean the caps. No need to peel them. Cut out the stems and chop finely. Grease a baking pan with butter and place the caps nicely on the pan. Chop onion and simmer it on a pan. Add minced meat and later mushroom stems. Sauté until brown, season with salt and pepper. Now, add parsley and egg. Preheat oven to 100 °C and put the baking pan in the oven. Cover the pan and bake until mushrooms release water. Now, increase the temperature to 150-170 °C and continue baking. Lift the lid a bit towards the end of baking to make sure that the meat turns red and that excess moisture evaporates.
Vegetable side. Cut tomatoes and peppers, scoop out seeds and cut into cubes. Fry in oil for a while, until it softens. Add chopped basil, season with salt and pepper and set aside.
Serve with vegetables and pastries.
