How to get rid of mice using old tricks

Mice

Do you want to get rid of mice in your house, attic, or garage naturally? There are several ways you can try and you will not be using chemicals or expensive traps.

Destroyed food, an unpleasant smell and droppings everywhere, even in food cabinets – these are probably the most unpleasant aspects of having a mouse in your home, besides hearing it in running around during night.

Mouse repellents

As soon as a discover that you have a mouse in your home the natural response is to take an action and to get rid of it as soon as possible. Well, that is if you do not have a dog or cat, which should solve the problem sooner or later. So, the best way is to use a mouse repelling products. In our case natural repellents, which may include for example:

Wild mint,

  • Mullein,
  • Anthemis
    Chamomile,
  • Clove,

Oleander,

  • Fresh green tomato leaves,
  • Tanacetum flowers (harvested in summer and dried).

Sprinkle these herbs in places where you often see mice, or even better near the nest. They will move away quickly. However, this method is more of a prevention measure, and works rather well at the beginning when the uninvited guests are settling in your house and when you have one or two mice only. If you need to deal with a large invasion it will not work well.

Aluminium foil and vinegar

In addition to herbs there are other repellents. Rodents hate hairspray. Another effective repellent is vinegar but you need to apply it properly and make sure that the unpleasant aroma will not dissipate quickly. Use an ordinary kitchen sponge or absorbent fabric dipped in vinegar. Place it in a small bowl, pour in vinegar in and let it work. The smell should drive mice away.

In addition to vinegar you should also hang strips of aluminium foil where mice hang out. They will not like the sound and light reflection. Always try to use a combination of several methods. If you use one method only, mice will probably get used to it.

Hairspray is another preventative measure. Spray it on spots where mice enter your house or workshop. You need to repeat it once a month and you should be able to prevent invasion of these animals.

Focus on prevention

The best way to prevent mice from entering your house is of course, a proper prevention. Thoroughly inspect your house from all sides and focus on cracks through which rodents may enter your house. You should also check floor linings or gaps that may exist around central heating pipes. Do not focus on the ground floor only because mice can easily climb the wall to the first or even the second floor or even the attic.

So, if you discover a problem make sure to cover all gaps with plaster. You can also install a special metal mesh in ventilation holes etc.
