Succulent plants that will make your windowsill look fabulous

Succulent plants

Succulent plants are very easy to grow and they come in many interesting shapes and varieties. You should definitely grow some at home. So, what plants should you buy to make that windowsill of yours fabulous?

Albuca spiralis

Commonly called the corkscrew albuca or frizzle sizzle is an unusual succulent that you must get for your windowsill. It comes from South Africa and its characteristic, twisted leaves grow from a bulbous base. Like most succulents, Albuca spiralis prefers warm, dry conditions. It also loves summer heat and if it gets cold you need to bring it inside.

It also needs plenty of light, but not a direct sunlight as it may burn leaves. So be careful and do not change its location quickly. It will do best in indirect, bright light that you usually get on a south or west facing window. If leaves tips are turning brown and drying out, you need to water more frequently. Remove old and completely brown leaves.

If you provide enough light, water and nutrients, Albuca spiralis will produce a pleasant vanilla scent. New leaves start to grow in late autumn or early winter, but flowers do not appear until spring.

Lithops aka flowering stones

These beauties also come from South Africa and easily handle droughts and temperature extremes, but they require a special care – different than other succulents and cacti, as these “living” stones are a bit picky when it comes to watering.

They are actually dormant in the summer and hardly need any watering but they grow from autumn to spring. Make sure to provide several hours of sunlight or good quality artificial light each day. If you care for lithops properly they will reward you with lovely flowers.
