Store carrots properly and eliminate early sprouting

Properly stored carrots should not start sprout but sometimes even trivial mistakes can promote early sprouting. You may not even be aware of these little mistakes…

Growing carrots (Daucus carota of the Daucus family) is pretty straightforward but storage may be little tricky. Even though our grandmothers used boxes filled with sand and with a great success, there were few things that may have caused problems. So, is there a better way? Well, here are few tips to help you keep carrots in perfect condition throughout the entire storage. Just learn know how to apply them.

Why carrots sprout during storage

If carrots start sprouting there is usually one reason only. The temperature in the storage room is too high, but there may be a combination of other factors. High humidity is also to blame and if combined with a higher temperature, carrots will sprout. Make sure to watch and reduce both factors if necessary.

The ideal temperature for storage is between 0 and +2 °C but if you experience warmer winter days, it can easily rise… And what about the humidity level? Well, gardeners are not in agreement on this point, but in general it should be below 85%. Anything above this value activates growth substances that carrots contain and they “wake up”. You want to avoid that of course.

Trick to prevent sprouting

Store carrots the way they were in the ground – with the green end up in a box filled with sand. This is a trick used by our grandparents and it will keep carrots in great condition and full of flavour until the end of winter.
