Mulching with grass clippings in july: The pros and cons
Mulching is one of those traditional practices that gardeners either embrace or oppose. When it comes to mulching with grass clippings, the situation is perhaps even more controversial. Not everyone intends to use grass clippings in this way. In the following paragraphs, we’ll therefore take a fairly detailed look at both the advantages and disadvantages of mulching with grass clippings.
There are plenty of advantages to mulching with grass clippings
So let’s summarize the main advantages of mulching with grass clippings clearly. The biggest benefits are as follows.
It’s free
First and foremost, it’s important to note that grass clippings are free. They’re essentially garden waste that we don’t need. We’re happy to get rid of them by simply using them where they’re needed. A traditional compost pile usually fills up very quickly.
It enriches the soil
Grass clippings gradually decompose and act as an organic fertilizer. This is certainly beneficial for plants.
The protective function of mulch
Erosion and weather conditions aren’t ideal for growing various plants. Mulch can prevent erosion to a certain extent.
It perfectly retains moisture
As a result, the soil underneath doesn’t dry out as quickly. In winter, on the other hand, mulch protects the soil from freezing.
Forget about weeds
Mulch is also great in this regard. It prevents weeds from growing. While it isn’t 100% effective, weeds usually don’t grow through it.

The disadvantages of grass clippings as mulch are fewer
We could start by looking at what such a flower bed looks like.
Aesthetic Considerations
If you look at a flower bed covered with a thick layer of grass clippings, it doesn’t look its best aesthetically. It looks rather chaotic and disorganized, as if no one had taken much care of it.
Excessive layer of thatch
If we use too much mulch, moisture won’t reach the soil and mold will form. That’s another reason why it’s important to use mulch in moderation.
