Onions keep for a very long time. You just need to store them properly
Have you already harvested your onions, or are you in the process of doing so? Whatever your situation, it’s definitely worth knowing how to store them. If you do this correctly, you can be sure that the onions will stay in excellent condition for a very long time and can be used in the kitchen without any problems. We’ll look at the correct way to store onions in much more detail below.
The right harvesting technique is important
That’s right. It’s certainly good to know when it’s best to harvest onions. We should do so when their leaves start to wilt and gradually turn yellow. The outer skin also hardens and gradually turns brown. When you touch it, it feels remarkably like paper. When this happens, we pull the onions out of the ground very carefully. We mustn’t damage them in any way. We should also leave a thin layer of soil on the onions. Then we can leave them to dry gradually.

How to hang onions correctly
We simply take the onions, clean them lightly at the roots and tie them together by the tops. You should leave the onions to dry for around 3 to 4 weeks. Once they are dry, remove the tops and roots. You should then store them in a cool but sufficiently dry room. The onions must not be allowed to freeze. Low temperatures and the absence of light are otherwise beneficial for storage.
Tip: How to tell when an onion is ready for harvesting? Avoid making unnecessary mistakes.
Check the onions before storing them
Definitely. You should inspect each onion very carefully. Any bruised areas or damaged flesh provide the ideal conditions for mould to develop. Watch out for high humidity too. This isn’t good for onions. They could even start to rot.
