Growing your own potatoes is absolutely brilliant. There’s nothing quite like the feeling you get when you harvest them. We grew potatoes in sacks this year and the harvest was definitely worth it. We had no choice but to cook them. They tasted absolutely perfect. That’s precisely why we’ll be looking at how to prepare them in more detail below. You might be thinking there’s not much to it when it comes to cooking potatoes. You’re right, but it’s still worth reading a few well-chosen tips.

We boiled them with their skins on

Definitely. It’s definitely worth boiling home-grown potatoes with their skins on. That’s the only way they’ll retain all their nutrients and won’t fall apart too much during cooking. What’s more, the skin is extremely thin, so we can eat it without any major problems. The potatoes just need a good wash. However, as ours were grown in a bag, they were washed very quickly. There wasn’t much dry soil clinging to them.

Slow cooking is worth it

Definitely. It’s better to cook potatoes slowly for longer. This method is much gentler. We cooked them for about 30 minutes. The best thing is to check how soft the potatoes are. They certainly don’t need to be overcooked. But simply by tasting them, you can easily tell whether they’re ready or not.

Tip: We grilled meatballs and potatoes. Simple and quick.

They’re brilliant just with onion and milk

You don’t even need meat. We fried some onion in oil until golden brown to go with the potatoes. Combined with the onion, the potatoes tasted absolutely perfect in every way. When you add some fresh, chilled milk, you can really savour their flavour. A fresh cucumber salad with kefir is also delicious. You can see from the photos that our potatoes looked great, both straight after harvesting and, of course, on the plate.
