Orchids are truly the pride of many homes. When we have them on the windowsill in the kitchen, living room or conservatory, they’re definitely worth it. That is, provided they’re in bloom. Quite simply, an orchid requires the right nutrients for proper, healthy growth. However, when it comes to fertiliser, less is often more with this plant. If you use too much fertiliser, the orchid may not thrive. On the contrary, it will suffer, flowering will cease, and you won’t be able to enjoy its beautiful blooms. So how should you care for an orchid in autumn?

What nutrients do orchids need?

Adequate nitrogen is vital for the healthy growth of leaves and young shoots. However, it’s important to use it sparingly, as too much will cause the plant to produce more green foliage rather than the much-desired flowers. Orchids mainly need potassium and phosphorus. A balanced fertiliser specifically designed for orchids, applied in the correct dosage, is ideal.

How to fertilise orchids correctly

It is best to apply the fertiliser to roots that have already been moistened. If your orchid is potted in bark, for example, it’s definitely worth watering it with settled water before fertilising. This reduces the risk of any damage to the plant’s root system. You should fertilise two to three times a week whilst the plant is actively growing. The basic rule is not to fertilise dry roots.

What should you avoid?

Be careful not to over-water orchids with various sugary solutions, yeast, garlic or other homemade mixtures. Proper care of the plant is far more important. Appropriate watering is often much more effective.

Temperature differences between night and day

These also play a very important role in the growth of orchids. Ideal night-time temperatures are recommended to be between 13 and 18 °C. It is certainly important to watch out for a rapid drop in temperature. This could cause the plants to go into shock, to which they would react by failing to flower or, in some cases, wilting.

Rice and banana fertiliser: a home-grown classic

Ordinary rice water makes an excellent fertiliser for orchids. All you need to do is rinse the rice. Nothing else is required. Be careful with the salty water left over from rinsing the rice – definitely do not use that. We should also mention the infusion made from banana skins, which works well too. Chop the peel into pieces and leave them to steep in water for 24 hours. You can then use the liquid to water your plants.
