Growing herbs in a spiral stand
Do you want to build an herb garden? Well, do not worry because it is not as difficult as it may seem. The only requirement is that you must plant herbs that have similar requirements close to each other. For example, some are happy growing in a shade and others in the sun. If you do not have enough space, but still want grow a diverse selection of herbs, you can start growing herbs in a “spiral”. This method allows you to grow several herbs in a small space together with those that have different requirements on habitat.
Herbal fragrance
Growing herbs on a spiral is not only practical, but it is also a nice feature in your garden. Use only natural resources to build the spiral and of course, you may use materials that you already have. For example, old bricks, stones or pieces of wood. You will also need cardboard (corrugated is best), straw, gravel and sand. And of course, you will need the right soil for your herbs.

Pay attention to the shape of the spiral
The shape of the spiral is important as it will create different growing conditions. So, you need to think about this in advance. The top of the spiral should be right in the middle and the rest of the curve should spiral down from there. Curve the spiral to the left. That way the bottom ends will be facing the west. The driest soil will be at the top of the spiral, and lower parts will get more moisture. The lighting conditions are different. You should grow herbs that like sunlight on the south side and those that need shade you should put on the north side.
Site selection
In general, choose sunny location for the spiral. The sun warms up stones and bricks that are part of the spiral during the day and the heat returns during the night. The spiral should also be protected from the wind.
Structure
Place a cardboard on a flat surface and draw a circle on it. The diameter depends on your options and needs. It may be only 1.5 m or as large as 3 m. However, the larger the diameter, the harder access to the upper herbs. We think the best diameter is 2 m. Cover the circle with stones (or bricks or wood). The maximum height of the spiral is in the centre and should be from 70 to 90 cm. It should descend from the top smoothly down to the ground. If you have large gaps you can plant grass in them.
Soil
The lower part of the spiral should be permeable. Choose gravel or coarse sand. Fill the spiral with straw and gravel or other permeable substrate and then put a layer of soil on top of it. Fill the spiral with soil no higher than 2 cm below the edge of the wall.
