Garlic watering rules. How much and how often

Garlic

Experienced gardeners know that proper and timely watering of garlic may increase yields and avoid certain problems. Garlic is especially demanding during the first period of development. So, how should you water garlic correctly?
Insufficient watering of young garlic negatively affects the quality and size. From the time of planting until harvesting, the soil moisture should range from 75 to 80 %.

How often should you water

In the first 14 days after planting, you should water every 4-6 days. This mainly applies if the weather is hot and dry. If the summer is rainy, you should not water and if the bud formation phase is over, you should reduce the amount of water. However, if the soil dries out you should water but do not overdo it. If you experience dry weather, 10-12 litres per m2 is more than enough. However, if it rains regularly, you may skip watering completely.

When should you water

Remember you should water garlic in early morning or in the evening. Not in the afternoon, because hot afternoon sun may burn leaves. Drops of water on leaves act like a magnifying glass. You should also provide mulch. A mulch layer will keep moisture in the soil for longer. You may use dry grass or sawdust.

When you should stop watering

If you want to store garlic for long period of time, stop watering about 20 days before harvesting but if you do not want to store, you may keep watering and stop about 7 days before harvesting. Observe the weather and the amount of rain and plan harvesting accordinglygarlic harvest.
