Butterfly bush will attract plenty of butterflies to you garden

Butterfly bush

Butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii) is a nice bush that reaches a height of about 2-3 m. The main attraction is a large and colourful bunch of flowers growing on top of the bush. The most common colours include white, pink and purple.

People like this bush not only for its attractive flowers but also for its intense aroma, which attracts many butterflies. However, to produce the attractive scent it needs to be strong and healthy. If it is not doing well it produces much less aromatic substances and very few butterflies will be attracted to your garden. So, how can you make sure that your butterfly bush is healthy?

Growing butterfly bush

It is a thermophilic plant, so it does well in sunny and quiet places – no wind. Do not forget to cover the bush for the winter to protect it from frost. To ensure a healthy growth, plant it in a fertile, well-permeable substrate, rich in nutrients, preferably with an alkaline pH.

Butterfly bushes produce intensive growth and need plenty of nutrients. A universal fertilizer for flowering plants should do well and should be applied at least once a week during the growing season. Butterfly bushes also require regular watering, especially in dry weather. Do not forget to remove dry flowers.

To keep butterfly bushes beautiful, you need to do annual spring pruning. Proper pruning will make them bloommore.

Common pests

Aphids are the most common pests and they attack all parts of the plant. You can find these creatures under leaves and if you fail to take an action they will deform and fall off. If you notice aphids, use aphid control products commonly available in stores.
