Someone will buy honey like that. Be sure to avoid the worst of it
Fall is in full swing and winter is approaching. This is the time of year when consumption of one traditional food tends to increase. Yes, you guessed it—it’s honey. Many people consider this natural bee product to be a sort of elixir that they simply must have at home. But buying honey isn’t always that simple. Ideally, of course, you should buy honey directly from a beekeeper who understands honey production and will sell you a high-quality product that’s worth the money. But if you head to the supermarket, you should be on your guard. Some honeys certainly won’t impress you with their quality. Quite the opposite.
Watch out for honey from countries outside the EU
Some manufacturers may add other ingredients to the honey, or they may create blends of honeys from various countries outside the European Union. You need to be very careful with such honeys, because they often contain substances that aren’t exactly safe for humans. After all, it was several years ago that the presence of antibiotics was detected in honey from China. You definitely don’t want that in your honey.
How can you tell if honey is high-quality—beyond just the label?
It’s actually quite simple. Just check the origin of the honey itself. Truly high-quality honey must originate from countries within the European Union. The EU has relatively strict standards for honey quality. You should also check the honey’s consistency. High-quality honey will crystallize, and it won’t form watery layers. It will flow slowly from one side of the jar to the other. It definitely isn’t worth going by price alone. The cheapest products may be adulterated.
Tip: Using honey in the garden. Even a small amount will benefit your plants.
It’s best to buy honey directly from a beekeeper
Exactly. There are quite a few sellers these days. There are also various health food stores and shops. You can usually find high-quality honey there that comes directly from a beekeeper, so you can be sure you’re making the right purchase.
