A hedge is a feature of many gardens. This is hardly surprising, as privacy is very important. What’s more, a hedge looks much better than a standard tarpaulin on a regular fence. Usually, this hedge is made up of thuja trees. These are small trees that can form a compact, impenetrable mass, making them ideal for use as a hedge. Unlike deciduous hedges, they do not shed their needles. However, problems with thuja trees turning brown can still arise. How can you tackle this effectively? Home remedies are all you need.

Why are your thuja trees turning brown from the inside?

There can be several causes for thuja trees turning brown. The most common cause is probably a fungal infection. The presence of such fungi can be recognised by a change in the colour of the needles, as well as by the fact that the green parts and the shoots themselves are dying off. If, in your case, it is a fungal infection, a simple garlic spray will eliminate it.

How to make a spray to prevent thuja trees from turning brown

Even a simple home remedy based on ordinary garlic can save your thuja trees. To make it, you only need 10 crushed garlic cloves and one litre of plain water. Mix everything together and leave to infuse for 24 hours. Then strain the mixture and apply it to the thuja trees using a spray bottle. Ideally, spray every day; for heavily affected thuja trees, even twice a day.

Browning is sometimes natural and sometimes caused by mistakes in cultivation

A certain degree of browning is natural in thuja trees. You need to take this fact into account. It can be caused, for example, by planting thuja trees too close together. The trees do not get enough nutrients, which is why they turn partially brown. The shrubs also do not receive the necessary amount of light. This leads to the needles drying out. Similarly, dense planting can also affect their water intake. It is best to check the trees regularly. This is the only way to spot any pathogenic changes.
