How to get a huge onion harvest: Just soak them properly
Homegrown onions from the garden taste completely different from store-bought ones. There’s no denying this fact. It’s simply worth it. Plus, growing onions isn’t a complicated process that’s impossible to manage. We usually end up with a good harvest. But it doesn’t always turn out exactly as we’d imagined. That’s why we’ll focus on soaking the onions in a solution before planting and on some other tricks that will lead to a maximum harvest—that is, large onions that are juicy and keep well in storage.
Plain salt and water can work wonders
Before planting the onions, prepare a very simple solution. You’ll only need 20 g of sea salt and 1 liter of water. Dissolve the salt thoroughly in the water, then soak the onions intended for planting in it. They should spend about 1 to 2 hours in this solution. Then plant them in the garden bed. Salt can thoroughly disinfect the onions and also protect them from rot and various diseases. When the first shoots appear, prepare another solution using 10 ml of ammonia and 1 liter of water. Apply this spray to the onions to prevent various diseases and attacks by harmful insects. Repeat this process every week.
The Perfect Organic Fertilizer from Yeast
We always have yeast at home, at least the dried kind. Dissolve 10 grams in 1 liter of warm water and leave it in a warm place. Water the onions twice a week. Results should be visible fairly quickly.
Carrots as the Onions’ Personal Bodyguards
That’s right. Carrots can repel pests that would otherwise happily feast on the onions. But onions aren’t to be outdone and help carrots just as much in this regard. Sowing carrots between the rows of onions is the least of it.
Tip: Be sure to use onion peels. They make excellent fertilizer.

What to use and avoid for fertilizing?
Phosphorus is very important for onions. Therefore, a fertilizer containing this nutrient is ideal. You should avoid fertilizing with fresh manure or potassium chloride. If you do, you’ll end up with a poor harvest, which none of us wants.
