Cracked kohlrabi in june: You can only partially prevent it
June is the month when we start looking forward to harvesting kohlrabi. The flavor of this wonderful vegetable from the garden is incomparable to that of the kohlrabi commonly sold in supermarkets. Among other things, kohlrabi from the garden doesn’t grow to gigantic sizes and is often characterized by various deformities. Cracking is a classic issue with them. This nuisance is a common occurrence with many heads. We will now take a closer look at the reasons for kohlrabi cracking, focusing also on how to prevent cracking to some extent.
Overwatering as a classic cause
If kohlrabi receives much more moisture than it actually needs, it can absorb a large amount of it. They then grow excessively, and their roots, stems, and other parts all expand. If the outer layer isn’t thick enough during this rapid growth, the kohlrabi will naturally crack. It simply can’t withstand the pressure.
Irregular watering as a problem
Irregular watering is also a cause of kohlrabi cracking. If the plant is dry for a long time and then receives a large amount of water, the expanding bulb cannot withstand the pressure and cracks.

Some varieties tend to crack
There are many kohlrabi varieties to choose from. Genetic predisposition can also be a cause of cracking. Simply put, some varieties do not have a strong enough outer layer and thus crack easily.
Beware of over-fertilizing kohlrabi
We practically did not fertilize the kohlrabi. It is usually not necessary at all. Fertilizers with high nitrogen content often promote growth to an extreme degree, and the kohlrabi’s skin simply cannot withstand it. Sudden changes in growth rate lead to cracking.
Extreme environmental factors
Temperature fluctuations and sudden changes in weather can also stress kohlrabi as it grows. One of the symptoms is cracking.
Prevention is simple
If you notice that kohlrabi are starting to crack, it’s worth adjusting how often you water them. It’s also definitely necessary to choose more resistant kohlrabi varieties.
