Maintaining moisture levels is extremely important for orchids. Especially now, during the summer and autumn, proper watering is essential. Ideally, place the pot containing the orchid inside an even larger planter. This will prevent unnecessary moisture loss. It is precisely a large pot that can retain moisture inside. However, it must be large enough; otherwise, mould could start to form, which will destroy the orchid. Regularly misting the buds is also advisable. However, watering orchids correctly is also important.

Never water orchids directly into the pot

That’s right. Traditionally, this is the easiest way to gradually kill off your orchids. Orchids are not the sort of flowers that should be watered in this traditional way, as is the case with many other houseplants, or with plants growing outside in the garden. How to water orchids correctly

It is more than enough to submerge the orchid, pot and all, in boiled or rainwater at roughly room temperature.Leave the orchid in the water for about 30 minutes. Then take it out and let it drain; alternatively, simply place it on a layer of kitchen roll. You should also wipe away any water from between the leaves and the ‘heart’ – the indentation where the leaves meet the stem. Water in this area is undesirable, as it could lead to rot or mould.

How can you help an orchid if you forget to water it?

It can happen that we forget to water an orchid for a while. It’s nothing out of the ordinary. We can then help it with a very simple revitalising treatment that we prepare ourselves. Simply dissolve 1 teaspoon of sugar in one litre of water. Place the plant in this special bath and leave it there for about 8 hours. You can even leave it in for a whole day. Afterwards, place it in fresh water for another hour. Then dry it off and return it to its usual spot. The plant will soon turn a lush green again and start to flower.
