Are your tomatoes not ripening? Thanks to this trick, you won’t be able to keep up with the harvest

Tomatoes

You know how it is. You look at your tomato plants and see only green fruits—at most a few that are already turning red. That’s not very many. You’re looking forward to it, but you have no choice but to wait until the fruits decide to turn the right color so they’re ready to eat. Or you can use a very interesting trick that might help your tomato plants. We’ll reveal it to you below: it’s not complicated at all.

A “Shock” That speeds up tomato ripening

We can give tomato plants a mild “shock” that will help the fruits ripen faster. It’s easy to do. Take a spade and, about 10 cm from the base of the plant, dig a circle about 20 cm deep. This will disrupt the long lateral roots, which are quite long in tomato plants. Thanks to this trick, the tomato plants will switch to a sort of self-preservation mode. As a result, they’ll devote all their energy to the fruit. Logically, this will cause them to change color more quickly and ripen faster. It’s best to try this trick on just one plant first.

Try soak-and-go watering

Very deep watering is also crucial when growing tomatoes. The water simply must reach the lower parts of the deep roots. It’s best to water less frequently but very thoroughly. It’s a good idea to bury a plastic bottle near the tomatoes and gradually pour water into it. You should always water early in the morning so the water on the plants has time to dry quickly. Otherwise, you’re giving slugs and other pests a chance to quickly destroy your crop.

Tip: Help your tomatoes ripen. An old gardening method can help.

Mulch pays off in the summer

Undoubtedly. Organic matter like this is always useful. For example, grass clippings help keep moisture near the plants for a longer time. Plus, it helps control excessive weed growth. Other plants can otherwise take nutrients—or even light—away from the tomatoes. In addition to grass, wood chips, bark, and other types of mulch are also suitable.
