A magical visual exploration of egg cooking
Do you love eggs and can’t imagine breakfast without them? Do you happily eat them for lunch or dinner too? Of course. Why not? Eggs taste brilliant and aren’t unhealthy. There’s also a huge variety of ways to serve them. Poached eggs, fried eggs, classic boiled eggs and so on. There are simply a huge number of ways to prepare them. That’s one of the reasons why eggs are in such high demand. Boiled eggs are the classic choice, and they can be cooked for varying lengths of time. We’re going to take a much closer look at cooking times and egg consistency. We’ll also share some lovely graphics from Instagram.
4 to 5 minutes is simply not long enough
Eggs prepared this way are probably only suitable for lovers of raw eggs – or perhaps even salmonella. After four minutes of cooking, the yolk doesn’t set significantly and remains essentially runny. That’s definitely not good. After 5 minutes, the white cooks to a certain extent and forms a slightly thicker layer. However, the yolk is still quite runny.

Soft-boiled eggs
A classic loved by children and adults alike. It can be cooked in just 6 minutes, but you should expect a very soft yolk. The ideal choice is 7 minutes, when the yolk is still quite soft, but not quite as soft as before. A creamy yolk consistency is achieved after 7 minutes’ cooking. This sort of egg is no longer a soft-boiled egg in the strictest sense, but it can certainly be eaten in the traditional way with a spoon. After 8 minutes’ cooking, you’ll have an egg with a creamy yolk.
Tip: The shell comes away in its own. A brilliant trickier peeling eggs.
Soft-boiled and hard-boiled eggs
If you like soft-boiled eggs with a slightly runny yolk that is still a rich dark yellow to orange colour, boil them for 9 minutes. After 10 minutes, the egg is boiled just as you like it.

Hard-boiled and dry eggs
If you want a hard-boiled egg, it should be left in boiling water for 11 minutes. A very firm consistency is achieved after a further minute’s cooking. After 13 minutes, the egg is dry, and after 14 minutes, it is very dry. A classic overcooked egg has been in hot water for 15 minutes or longer. You can tell this by cutting it open: the yolk will have a greenish tinge around the edge. In short, there are various ways to cook eggs. What’s your favourite method?
