A decent harvest: A pictorial guide to harvesting potatoes from a bag

This year, we decided to grow potatoes in bags. We planted them at the start of May and simply watered them regularly whilst waiting for the harvest. Now, at the end of July, we’ve decided to harvest the first plant and see whether growing them this way was worth it at all. The result certainly didn’t disappoint, as you’ll see for yourselves in the following lines.

We chose a plant with wilted foliage

That’s right. We have a total of three bags in which we planted the potatoes. We simply chose the one that looked the most wilted. Harvesting wasn’t difficult at all. First, we took the bag away from the area where we’d grown the potatoes. This spot is quite small and cramped. We laid the plant down so that the pocket in the bag was facing upwards. A small amount of soil came loose from the top, but it was a negligible amount.

There were no surprises

We had a rough idea of how many potatoes might be in the bag. After digging into the soil a few times, I managed to pull out the first, rather small one. The others followed. Some were tiny, others a bit bigger. But we didn’t really pull out any extra-large ones. You can see the total harvest for yourselves in the photo gallery and in the photos in this article.

Is it worth growing potatoes in bags?

We naturally had to ask ourselves this question. The answer was yes. If you don’t have enough space to set up a small plot, this is a brilliant solution. That’s how we’ve done it, and the bags with the plants don’t look bad at all. The harvest itself was just the icing on the cake. In the end, we simply boiled the potatoes in their skins in salted water. Served with onions and a cucumber salad, they tasted absolutely delicious.
