Eggshells in garden beds: Proper use ensures a great harvest
For many of us, eggshells are simply an integral part of household waste. That’s a shame, because they actually have some really interesting uses. After all, our grandmothers didn’t throw them away—they always kept them on hand for the garden. In garden beds, they can often do a world of good. It’s just a matter of using them correctly. That’s why we’ll take a much closer look at ways to use eggshells in the following paragraphs.
A Great Nutritional Boost for Tomato Seedlings
Our first tip is an excellent fertilizer for tomato seedlings. All you need is a total of 3 eggshells. Wash them thoroughly, dry them, and then wrap them in a thin cloth. Next, crush them completely using a rolling pin, a mallet, or another tool. This will create a powder, which you then pour into a three-liter bottle and fill with water. Let it sit for three days, shaking the contents regularly to mix them. The liquid is then diluted with water in a 1:3 ratio. The fertilizer contains magnesium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, and calcium. It is ideal for both houseplants and outdoor flowers and vegetables.

Fertilizer made from eggshells and vinegar
A fertilizer made from these ingredients is also an excellent choice. Prepare the shells from three eggs. Dry them and grind them thoroughly into a powder. Add a little wine vinegar. Let the mixture dry, and you’ll end up with a loose fertilizer. You can then easily mix this directly into the soil around the plants.
How to disinfect eggshells
It’s very simple. Place them in cold water and then put them in the microwave for 2 minutes. This prevents harmful bacteria like salmonella and others from getting into the soil.
Eggshells as excellent nutrition for chickens
Eggshells contain a relatively large amount of calcium, making them an excellent source of calcium for hens and chicks. Simply mix ground or finely crushed shells into their feed.
Tip: Hens aren’t raised just for their eggs. They’re useful in other ways, too.
