Planting tomatoes and cucumbers in May. Mistakes that can cost us our harvest
May is planting season. Many types of fruits and vegetables are ready to go into the garden. Here, tomatoes and cucumbers are considered classics. We’ll focus on these crops in the following paragraphs, in much greater detail. Specifically, we will cover the rules for planting tomatoes and peppers. But we will also focus on some mistakes that can easily cost us our entire harvest, which is, of course, incredibly frustrating.
Basic rules for planting tomatoes
The Right Timing Is Key
First and foremost, you need to know when tomatoes can be moved outdoors to the garden bed. Ideally, this is after the last frosts have passed. Temperatures should no longer consistently drop below +7 °C.
How to plant tomatoes correctly?
Tomatoes should be planted rather deeply. The plant can be buried in the ground up to the first leaves. When planting, you should use a sturdy support for the seedling to lean on. Otherwise, the tomatoes should have plenty of space—ideally at least 60 cm.
Tip: Spiral stakes for tomatoes are also an option. In that case, you don’t need to tie the plant up.
Watch out for common mistakes when planting tomatoes
A common mistake is planting too shallow, which prevents the roots from establishing themselves properly. Similarly, adding a support later is not ideal, as it can damage the roots. Don’t forget to water them immediately after planting.

Main rules for planting cucumbers
When to plant cucumbers outdoors?
It’s similar to tomatoes, but cucumbers are perhaps even more sensitive to cold. The ideal time to plant is when the soil is at least 15 °C. The seedlings should be placed in a sheltered spot where there is no cold wind.
How to plant cucumbers?
The opposite applies to cucumbers compared to tomatoes. Under no circumstances should we plant them deep. On the contrary, they should be planted rather shallowly, and we must take the utmost care not to damage the roots.
Direct sowing into the soil can be done starting in mid-May. Earlier is not ideal. The seeds are placed directly into the soil, at a depth of 2 to 3 cm. Two seeds are placed in each spot.
Watch out for common mistakes when planting cucumbers
Cucumbers love heat. Cold soil results in slow and poor germination, which is undesirable. Also, be careful not to overwater, as cucumbers do not tolerate it well. Mulching is also essential. Straw is suitable for cucumbers, as it retains moisture. Above all, avoid watering the leaves, or mold will develop quickly.
