Are you still thinking about planting some crops? Why not? October is relatively warm and also long. But the days for planting are slowly getting shorter, and you really can’t put it off much longer. One of the most popular crops is undoubtedly onion sets. Planting them is definitely worth it. You can certainly plant them in October—provided, of course, that you choose the right variety that can survive the winter without major problems. So let’s take a much closer look at planting onion sets in October.

Planting onion sets in the fall offers several benefits

That’s right. There are several advantages to planting these onions in the fall. The first is the absence of pest infestation. Now, in the fall, nothing should threaten the onions in the ground. You can be certain of this fact during the winter, as pests truly won’t attack on frosty days and nights.

When else can you plant onion sets?

A very important temperature threshold for planting onion sets is 5 °C. If the nighttime temperature drops below this threshold, it’s not advisable to plant onion sets. It would be an unnecessary risk, as the onions might not sprout at all. For now, however, temperatures are favorable, so you can go ahead and plant them.

Tip: Onion keep for a very long time. How to do it?

Rules for Proper Planting of Onion Sets

Small onion sets should be placed in holes. The depth of the holes should be around 6 cm. In the fall, the onion sets must be planted somewhat deeper. The reason is simple: this provides better protection against frost. The distance between holes should be about 8 cm, and the rows should be 25 cm apart. And what about the bulbs themselves? The best ones are smaller and firm. Their size is around 2 cm. They must be planted with the tip facing upward.

Protecting the Onions Over Winter

This is essentially essential. A plastic sheet laid over the bed in winter works great. However, it’s also fine to simply mulch them. As for watering, do so only in the fall. After that, leave the onions alone.
