A tip for preparing beans: No more gas and long cooking times

Beans

Legumes are an important part of a balanced diet, and it’s definitely worth preparing them at home. Beans are undoubtedly among the best-known legumes. They can easily be grown at home. No matter what kind you have at home, the main problem is usually that they take a very long time to cook until they’re tender. Plus, they cause bloating in many people after eating them. That’s why it’s worth using a little trick that helps with both issues. We’ll take a closer look at it in this article.

Why do beans cause gas?

The culprits are the oligosaccharides they contain. These substances are often not digested, which triggers a fermentation process. Logically, fermentation produces gases, so it’s no wonder that people experience bloating afterward. However, these oligosaccharides can be eliminated before preparation and while cooking the beans, and in a relatively simple way.

How to prepare beans that don’t cause bloating?

First and foremost, you need to soak the beans in water overnight. Ideally, this should be for at least 8 hours, after which the water is drained and the beans are thoroughly rinsed. Then, pour fresh water over the beans and bring them to a boil. Once they come to a boil, drain the beans again and rinse them with cold water. Then bring the beans to a boil again and cook for about a quarter of an hour. Finally, drain them once more and rinse with cold water. Then cook the beans until they are completely tender. Beans prepared this way are ideal for digestion.

Two tricks for cooking beans faster

The first is very simple and involves replacing regular water with mineral water. You’ll probably find this strange, just as we did, but it works great. Thanks to the minerals and salt, the beans soften much faster. As a result, they’ll be cooked much sooner. The second trick involves adding a little baking soda to the soaked beans. This can speed up the softening process by up to eight times.
