Are you looking forward to sweet strawberries straight from your own garden? Why wouldn’t you? It’s definitely worth it. The ones currently in supermarkets aren’t worth much. They’re often not even ripe yet, and even when they are ripe, they usually don’t taste very good. Another problem with them is that they’re often unusable the next day, even when stored properly in the fridge. The ideal time to plant new strawberry plants is right now. We sorted through the older ones two weeks ago. It was quite a lot of work, and not many usable ones remained. Now, among other things, we’ve also planted onions in the same bed.

Tip: How to care for strawberry plants after winter? There are a few steps to follow.

The selection of strawberry plants is varied

Exactly. You just need to buy high-quality seedlings. We shopped at two small garden centers. At one, we were looking for everbearing strawberry plants, and at the other, classic strawberry plants that bear fruit only once. We love a big harvest of standard strawberries, but it’s also nice to be able to pick strawberries all season long. Everbearing strawberries are ideal in this regard. Of course, we also have three monthly strawberry plants and two trailing varieties hanging in pots. Most of the seedlings were already in bloom and simply looked very good.

Planting strawberries is simple

It’s really nothing complicated. All you need to do is dig a hole and then carefully pull the strawberry plant out of the small plastic pot. It’s best to squeeze the root system from the sides so the plant comes out more easily and we can plant it. Pour a little settled water into the hole and place the strawberry plant inside. Then firmly press the soil around it, and you’re done. There should be enough space between the strawberry plants; they will spread out.

Onions among strawberry plants as the ideal choice

Exactly. There’s plenty of space between the strawberry plants; it would be a waste not to use it. Just plant a standard onion set there. We chose both white and red onions. We plant the yellow ones in the garden bed as usual. Last year we grew some nice bulbs, so hopefully we’ll have the same this year. We leave the garden beds as they are; we don’t mulch them because of the onions. Of course, we have to expect more frequent weeding.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about planting strawberries and onions

When should I plant strawberries?

Ideally now, in early April, when it’s already warm outside.

What kind of onion works well between strawberry plants?

It doesn’t matter at all. Any variety should grow.

How to care for strawberry plants and onions?

You need to weed the bed more often. Weeds also grow around the onions, so we must be careful not to pull them out as well.
