Feed, but don’t overfeed. Grandpa’s secret to a bountiful strawberry harvest
Growing strawberries isn’t rocket science. Still, it’s worth paying attention to certain steps and following some helpful tips. After all, the harvest can vary significantly.
In the following lines, we will therefore focus on some important aspects directly related to growing strawberries. We’ll convince you that even seemingly simple tricks can actually work and yield plenty of extra sweet strawberries.
Why don’t strawberries yield as much as we’d like?
Before we dive into specific tips and tricks for strawberries, let’s look at why strawberry plants don’t produce as many berries as we might expect. We’ve summarized the reasons below:
– depleted soil with minimal nutrients,
– lack of light and heat due to shading of the bed,
– overly dense planting of strawberry plants,
– improper watering,
– leaving strawberry plants without removing runners.
Natural nutrient replenishment as a foundation
One of the traditional pieces of advice from our grandfathers was that strawberries should be fed, but not overfed. Nutrient replenishment should be as natural as possible. So when should you fertilize?
The right time to fertilize is important
You should fertilize immediately in the spring, then before the strawberries bloom, and again after harvesting the fruit. The first fertilization kickstarts the growth of the strawberry plants, the second supports fruit formation, and the third aids in the regeneration of the plant itself.

Homemade fertilizer for strawberries
We can make a simple homemade fertilizer ourselves. All we need is 1 liter of water and 10 grams of regular yeast. You can also use a teaspoon of dried yeast. We’ll also need 1 teaspoon of sugar. The process is simple. Dissolve the yeast and sugar in lukewarm water and let the mixture sit for about 2 hours. Before using it, dilute it with another 4 liters of water. Water the strawberry plants at the roots 2 to 3 times a week.
Tip: April is a very important month in the strawberry patch. There are many tasks we need to tackle.
How does the fertilizer work?
It helps in many ways. Specifically:
– it promotes the growth of the strawberry plants’ root system,
– it supports microbial activity in the soil,
– it improves nutrient absorption.
More interesting tips for improving strawberry yields
Let’s summarize them simply in bullet points again. Many of these are truly worth doing. For example, you should:
– mulch, ideally with straw or dry grass,
– regularly remove runners,
– remove weeds,
– water strawberry plants regularly at the roots,
– rotate growing locations,
– strengthen plants with wood ash or a banana peel extract.
